WhatsApp recently introduced a feature that allows users to mention specific contacts in their status updates, expanding the platform’s options for private and focused sharing. With this feature, users can tag up to five contacts directly in a status, and each tagged individual receives a notification of the mention, similar to notifications on Instagram and Facebook.

Notably, this mention is kept private, and only the tagged individuals see it—other viewers of the status do not see who was tagged. This privacy measure lets users share specific updates with selected contacts without alerting the broader audience of the status update.

In addition, WhatsApp has rolled out “status likes,” enabling users to react to status updates with a single heart icon visible only to the creator. This feature aligns with how Instagram’s story reactions work but is limited to private feedback without a public count, allowing only the person who posted the status to see who liked it.

These additions cater to a more personalized experience, and WhatsApp’s continued development of status updates helps retain its competitive edge against other social media platforms. These features are being gradually rolled out globally, with the expectation that more users will soon have access after updating their apps.
